FAQ
What is the difference between Sunbrella Marine, Awning, and Upholstery fabric.
All Sunbrella fabrics are performance fabrics built around 100% solution dyed acrylic fibers.  This means the color is saturated in every fiber before any yarn is manufactured and before any fabric is woven.  This makes Sunbrella Marine and Sunbrella Upholstery fabrics closely related.  The distinctions are subtle.  The most significant difference in these products is the weave which is constructed around their primary purposes.  Sunbrella Marine and Awning fabrics are woven tightly creating a heavy product with an ability to repel water and dissipate sunlight for a better shading effect.  Sunbrella upholstery fabric is often lighter, with a more supple feel.  Sunbrella upholstery weaves are not as tight and may let water through the fabric though no water will be absorbed.  These upholstery fabrics are great for soft surfaces in indoor or outdoor living environments whereas marine grade fabrics are more suitable for awnings, umbrellas, boat seats, boat covers, boat toppers, and biminis.  Sunbrella Marine and Upholstery fabrics have found their way into RV use as well.

Other considerations between these two applications include width.  Upholstery fabrics are generally 54” wide.  Marine and Awning fabrics may be found in both narrower and wider variations than upholstery.

One final consideration is workability.  Sunbrella Marine and Awning fabrics are woven more tightly creating a stiffer product. In general, this makes the sewing process more difficult and requires a more robust machine for regular work.
